This review may be a bit long, so bear with me.

First, I have to comment on the few negative reviews I've seen here. And please notice that there are only a few. That alone should tell you something. While Richard may have no problem speaking up for himself, I do feel compelled to offer some thoughts. After reading the negative things some people have said, I wonder if they attended the same class I did. I'm not sure what some of these people expected to learn about photography in one night. It's an introductory class, for heaven's sake. Asking Richard what settings to use to take a picture of granny without understanding the principles behind it is like asking Jimmy Page to show you how to play "Stairway to Heaven". He shows you, you plunk away at it, and then what? Can you claim to know how to play guitar? Can you play another song? I don't think so. Like music, photography is both an art and a craft and people spend their entire lives trying to master it. I think what Richard is trying to do is teach you how to be a photographer, not a picture-taker. He's trying teach you how to make photographs that are clear and honest and communicate well. He's trying to teach you how to see the world with a photographer's eyes, and how to use your technical skills to then capture that moment with your camera. And I think he does it very, very well.

I just met Richard 7 weeks ago and I just finished Photo 1. Is it a bit unorthodox? Yes, but that's part of what makes it work. Is it easy? No. It's like learning to swim. You have to work at it. It's confusing and frustrating and sometimes you sink and sometimes you stay afloat. But you have to just keep on going. All the while, the master lifeguard is right there, coaching, challenging, pushing, reassuring. You're not going to swim the 400 meter medley the first night but I promise you that if you come to Richard's class with an open mind, the desire to learn, and a commitment to work hard at it, you WILL learn. The resources are all right there. All you have to do is show up and participate. Richard is a living, breathing encyclopedia of photography. The real kind. The kind that spent years out on the street making a living doing what he loves. Not the kind that has never left the classroom. And the rest of the community is made up of very real, very generous people who love photography and are eager to share what they know. Someone complained that Richard talked incessantly about himself and showed off his own work. In the 7 weeks I was in class with him, he only showed 2 pieces of his work, both times with the purpose of making a very salient point. He is, however, VERY proud of the work of the student body that hangs so prominently on the walls. Rightfully so. It's fantastic! If I could teach someone to do what those students have done in 9 months, I'd be proud too. The point is that these classes are about them, not about Richard, and about what I can accomplish if I put in the effort. If he can teach them do it, I can do it too. And believe me when I say I want to, and I will!

The very best teachers and coaches I've had in my life were the ones that really wanted me to find my own voice and to even exceed them, the ones that pushed me the hardest and made it safe for me to move outside my comfort zone, the ones that let me know it was ok to fail because my ultimate success was born out of those mistakes. Richard certainly fills those shoes. And all that spread out over about 40 hours of instruction for $400 from a teacher who's available to you by phone practically any time of day. That's about $10 an hour. I've seen people blow $400 on a dinner that was over in 2 hours. $400 spent on this will last you for as long as you can pick up a camera. Find me a better deal that that.

Richard rocks. His program rocks. His facility rocks. He's one of the most genuine, generous, big-hearted people I've ever met and he has an unmistakable passion for what he's doing. Show up, ask around, and see for yourself. If you want to learn how to be a photographer in an environment that's fun and nurturing and really all about the student, come and join us. Over the past 7 weeks, I've learned so much about myself, my camera, my subjects, and how we are all related. I can't wait for next Monday to start the next step of my journey. I'm honored to be a part of this community. Thanks Richard!

WOW.... what a waste of time. I bought the Saturday date night class, and I wish I hadn't. The ONLY plus to this class was the wine and snacks provided. Let me break this down for you. Upon arrival, you are rudely greeted with "What kind of camera do you have? No, that's no good... you'll use one of mine". Ummm, ok. Wasn't the point of this class to learn how to use your OWN camera? For the next hour you wander along three or four walls looking at pictures that his students have taken. After the 15 minutes this takes.... you spend the next 45 standing around. Literally.

Once the "class" begins, you pretty much are put in a seat and demanded to listen to Richard go on and on about the other classes he offers, about all the things his website offers, about his background, about how great he is. 30 minutes later... you start to learn something. Oh, but wait... You won't learn anything that you can actually use. He goes over the technical aspects of your camera, but refuses to put it all together for you. I remember at the end of our class, someone asked "So, can you tell us how to put all this information together? So that if I wanted to take a picture of two people in a living room for example, what settings would I use". Richard replies.... "well you'll have to take one of my photo classes to learn THAT". Uhhhh, I thought that's what we were doing here!? It was a total waste of time.... especially a Saturday night date night.

This Is Where You Need To Take Classes

Richard Stromberg's Chicago Photography Classes are amazing! I began with Photo I nearly two years ago. I didn't know a thing about photography and didn't even own a DSLR camera. I called Richard and he got online right away and helped me find the perfect camera for me. Two years later I am a photographer at a reputable portrait studio in the suburbs and I am still in love with the camera I bought for Photo I (my Nikon D-90).

This School is something very special and I feel lucky to be a part of it. I have taken 4 classes here and now help teach a lab/Lightroom class. There are dozens of top-of-the-line computers (all equiped with Lightroom and Photoshop) to process photos on and Epson printers for archival printing. If you want hands-on learning and real world experience, this is where you need to take classes. The classes can be demanding at times (Learning will occur!!!) and I absolutely love the teachers who will push me harder to bring out my best work (Thanks Marcus and LeJean!!!).

All in all, I would suggest classes here to people looking to learn how to use their camera, take better photos of their kids and even begin their career in photography.

Five Stars.

Very Affordable Compared to Competitors

Last year, I decided that I wanted to begin photography lessons. After doing some online research, I found Richard's Chicago Photography Classes. I attended the FREE Sunday class and realized that this was a special place to learn. It is student-centered and every aspect of the class is hands-on. Not only did Richard teach the fundamentals on photography, he also consulted us on which camera and lens to buy for a beginner (Photo I student). The best part - all of this was FREE! A couple weeks later, I enrolled in Photo I which I must say is very affordable when compared to other competitors in the area. The class schedule is EXTREMELY flexible allowing you to fit the classes into your chaotic work schedule. The lab instructors were also very helpful. I am now proficient in Adobe Lightroom! As soon as Photo I ended, I decided to enroll in Photo II. In Photo II, you are given keys to the Ravenswood Ave. studio. This allows you to go to lab on your own time. I found this extremely beneficial. Another point to mention is that the Photo II instructors are very knowledgeable. They go above and beyond for their students to ensure they fully grasp the concepts discussed in class. One of them even published a book on Adobe Lightroom and photography. Overall, it was an amazing experience and I plan on taking Photo III in the next few weeks. Thank you to Richard and his amazing team. You're all WONDERFUL! Keep up the great work.

One of the Best Investment Decisions I've Ever Made

I took Photo I, II, and III here in 2009-2010 and it was one of the best investment decisions I've ever made. Yes, DSLR cameras and lenses are expensive...yes, you will need to put in the hours learning about photography, Adobe Lightroom, printing, etc.... but it will pay dividends in the end!!!

All three classes are very good, but I personally made the biggest leap in my skill set after taking Photo II with Cara. I had a lot more confidence in nailing my exposure after taking this class.

My lab partner from Photo II is now a successful professional children's photographer. I constantly think about quitting my day job to do the same, but right now I am just happy to be a serious hobbyist. My vacation photos are incredible, and I get a lot of requests to do photography shoots on the side (mostly from my mom friends, and brides on a budget).

Thank you Richard for creating such a wonderful photography community in Chicago.

Thank You for your kind words Grace. It has always been my wish that my students grow and thrive. And if they can make a little money so much the better. Our new space has two Computer Labs, more than 20 Computers, imac's and PC's. We have eight "best in class" Epson printers as well as three Epson mural printers. Our "WithInSight Gallery" now has 110 16X20" archival, framed and matted color prints. Most of the exhibitors have less nine months experience and all of the photographers started here with Photo I. An Amazing Place to Learn and Meet New Friends

Hi everyone:) I've been having a blast taking photo classes at Richard's Photography School.Photo I with Richard and Photo II with Cara were ones of the best classes I ever took (including political science studies back in Poland). I thought I'll just try to learn a little about photography, just for fun... I haven't even realised when I became addicted to photography. I literally dream about it. I have plans of getting a better equipment before any other new, big purchases. I am interested in hearing and learning more and more all the time. I look at the world around me with the 'eyes of the camera'. The thought: "that'd make a great/interesting/original picture" pops out in my head very often. It's all been triggered in my head because I've started taking classes at Richard's school. And I am so happy I have!

Thank you Richard for bringing together incredible people who are great teachers. They all (including you) share their passion and knowledge with us and are ready to help us practically at any time (epecially you). Thank you for creating a place with such a great family atmosphere. I've chosen your school after doing a careful research. I knew it'd be a good place to learn something at. But it is really an amazing place to learn and meet new friends. Thank you! I'm looking forward to all the classes in the future I take, starting with tonight's Photo III :)

I recently completed Richard's Photo I – a seven week course. I was nervous about the 7 week commitment (especially since I live about an hour outside of the city) but it was well worth it. I truly learned a lot and really enjoyed all of the added lessons you get from hearing about Richard's extensive experience and rich history in Chicago. I absolutely plan on signing up for the Photo II course to continue my journey. These classes are open and honest and it's true that "laughter will be heard, and learning will occur." I had previously taken a DSLR "bootcamp" course as well as a 1 day crash course in Adobe Lightroom from another Chicago photography school and I must say the learning did not sink in- there was no time for interaction with the instructor or your classmates and you didn't get a chance to apply your learning into actual photographs. I wouldn't waste my money next time!

I took the 90-minute freebie basics class before committing to the Photo I class. In my mind, you can't be more honest about your product than a that. 90 minutes was plenty of time for me to feel confident about what I'd be getting from a full course.

As the first sentence indicates, I was impressed enough with the 90-minute freebie to sign up for a 7-week course. I wasn't disappointed. Richard, the owner of the place, teaches the once-a-week class while others teach the once-a-week lab time devoted to learning Lightroom, work on the assignments from class and print the photos. The class time and the lab time can each be up to 3 hours plus whatever time you take to do the assignments. I happened to be taking several other classes that covered almost every other day of the week (in addition to a full time job) and I still found time to do the assignments and attend the classes and labs without any problem.

I thought the labs were really well done and properly staffed. I think all but two of the labs had two instructors available so individual questions and issues were addressed pretty quickly. I should note, too, that any questions emailed outside of class were answered within an hour if not minutes and it didn't seem to matter what time of day or night I contacted them. The variety of instructors I met during class, lab and around the school were really approachable and obviously live for photography.

I think the biggest benefit I got out of the class was learning the technical aspects of the camera and functions that I didn't even know it had....and, this is after I had read and researched a number of digital photography books, blogs, etc. on my own.

As probably anyone with a DSLR camera knows, photography is a pricey hobby so I wanted to make sure I wasn't dropping a bunch of money for a lack-luster experience. I was actually a little bummed at first that I missed out on some online deals for other places that friends found after I committed to Richard's class but it later sounded like another example of "you get what you pay for." I haven't been to any of the other schools but it sounds like I got much more out of my experience than some of my friends who went elsewhere for less $$$. In fact, some of the students in my class had actually been to other schools and felt like they'd been ripped off. I can honestly say I feel like I got my money's worth.

After I save a few bucks, I'll be back for the next level of classes.

I just finished with the seven week photo 1 and it was everything I thought it would be and much more. I'm really glad I did it because I was someone who just bought the camera and did not even know how to use it properly. Highly recommended for anyone just starting out or wanting to take it to the next level. Richard Stromberg and his team couldn't have been nicer, friendly and very knowledgeable. They make you feel like you are part of the family. His approach and method of teaching is really unique. All I really wanted to do was to take better photos, but with Richard's encouragement in Photo I and Cara's instruction in Photo II, they are making a photographer out of me. Who knew! You cannot expect a college classroom here, but you will work hard. Check out the great website and come take the free first class!

I completed Photo I about a month ago. I signed up for the class to learn how to use my DSLR camera that was given to me over 5 years ago and I never learned how to use it to it's full capabilities. I decided to upgrade and purchased a newer camera. You may not be a personal fan of Richards or you may not like the decor or his style of teaching. As with anything you have to find a fit and style that works for you. However, anyone who walks away without a thorough understanding of how to use your camera as well as a head start on the technical aspects of photography, either you didn't want to learn, you didn't listen and/or photographies not for you. I learned enough in Photo I to get me started and at least understand how to operate my camera without just pointing and shooting. I'm currently in Photo II which is a lot more technical and I'm so glad I took it right after Photo I as suggested. I am more than pleased with the instruction given.

Good program with lots of support and good facilities. Very knowledgeable instructors who are either photography professionals or semi-pros. It does require work and a desire to learn, but for those who want to compose better / more beautiful photos, the results are well worth the effort.

This is a gem of a resource. And Richard is a gem of a guy.

These classes are tailored to your needs. If you just want to come home from vacation with photos that will not have everybody's head lopped off, take just photo I. Or, if you are interested in really becoming a professional in quality, if not in actual profession, take the complete package that will lead you to gallery walls within nine months. Photo two comes with a key to the lab that enables those with full-time jobs and full-time families access to the studio at any time. Not only will you become a better photographer by taking his course, but you will get to appreciate and be appreciated, by other photographers. Kind of like a real time version of Flickr. Richard strives to create a community of photographers, and he has succeeded.

You may have heard that he is quirky, and he is in a good way, but he also has great people working for him. As I said, it is a community.

An Exceptional Experience

I just finished photography one with Richard and it was an exceptional experience:

  1. Great physical set up for the school. Nice classroom and first class computer centers.
  2. The lab and lecture really helped develop a sound fundamental knowledge base.
  3. I taught in a public high school for 30+ years and the instructional strategies are sound and completely student centered.
  4. Initially I searched Yelp for a photography class. There are a number of classes to choose from. One advantage of CPS is that the first class session was free. After attending the first class I felt like it would be a great experience and it WAS.
  5. I initially thought the class was expensive but after finishing photography 1, I think it is a great value for the money.

Richard is a world class character and a lovably irreverent one. He is passionate about photography and teaching and he expects that people take the class seriously. (don't text and the dog ate my photographs doesn't go over well either) Richard is a real photographer who loves to teach so you aren't just getting text book stuff. He's got some great war stories and they are actually leading you somewhere important. At the beginning he seemed scary but that's short lived. We've all had the cool high school teacher who comes off tough and then loosens up. That's what happens and much of what he says is with tongue in cheek. I've always liked to take pictures and it's great to start to take photography to the next level.

The first day of class Richard gives you his phone number and says you can call him from that day for the rest of your life. One day I went out to shoot an assignment and I didn't know how to turn off auto bracketing. After he couldn't explain how to turn it off on the phone he had me meet him at a gas station. Who does that? One of the lab teachers also spent well over an hour on the phone with me because I was lost on an assignment.

It's a little scary but TAKE A CHANCE!

Learn How to Take a Photograph

I just finished Photo I here. I have taken several other Photo I classes (at COD and Chicago Photography Center) and this was the first time that I attened ALL of the classes and did ALL of the assignments. So it was definitely worth the money considering it is the same amount I paid other places. I will definitely be taking Photo II here.

Here is why I was successful here and did not give up like I have in the past:

1. The classes are actual lectures about how a camera works and how to use it. The classes at Chicago Photography Center were about famous photographers, video documentaries of photography, looking at published photographs, and looking at photographs that the teachers took. I thought it was boring. I don't want to learn about photography; I want to learn how to take a photograph! Richard teaches that.

2. Richard looks at your assignment - everybody's assignment - EVERY week. Most places do not look at or comment on everyone's work regularly. Most places only give you feedback if you ask for it. So, knowing that, I never felt forced to do the assignments. So I didn't. But when you know that Richard is going to start every class by collecting the assignment, I was motivated to do the assignments.

3. This is a great community of people who are knowledgeable, friendly, humble, and never condescending to your work or aspirations. You can ask anyone anything here and get a good answer.

This class is NOT for you if you are only looking to learn Lightroom. The labs in this class give you pages on how to do basic functions and then you work individually on your own images. There are usually two instructors there to answer questions and help. If you are looking to improve your Lightroom skills beyond the basics, you should look for a Lightroom specific class.

Also, keep in mind that photography is not easy. You will not feel great about every assignment you complete, but just keep doing them and you will improve over 7 weeks.

For those looking for books on learning photography, I highly recommend Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson.

Clearly a Curriculum That Has Been Well-Thought-Out

I started with the free 90-minute workshop, signed up for Photo I, then continued with Photo II and then on to Photo III. I continued on because I was learning a lot both about my camera and also about photography. Each session built on the previous session (i.e. Photo II built on Photo I, Photo III built on Photo II). It is clearly a curriculum that has been well-thought-out.

I found all of the classes interesting, and I liked all three of the instructors I had--they were knowledgeable, enthusiastic about teaching photography, and easy to get in touch with when I had questions outside of class.

In addition to the class time, there is also lab time where you learn (on their computers) how to use photography software (Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop) to improve your pictures, and where you learn to print out pictures on professional-grade printers. This was helpful, and also fun, since you can print out your pictures (in Photo II and Photo III) from a quality printer on quality paper and in larger sizes.

Last but not least, Richard Stromberg (who teaches Photo I), spends a lot of time outside of class helping individuals with questions about how specific cameras work, what equipment to buy, etc. He's a valuable resource, all included in the tuition price.

I started as a complete novice when it comes to photography, and not at all artistic, but I felt that I really moved forward in these classes. I am taking a break for the summer, but will continue with other classes in the fall.

I've taken several classes here now and I so I feel I can make an accurate review. I first took Richard's free one day seminar one year ago, before I bought a DSLR camera, and found it to be very interesting and secure my decision to buy one.

I saved up and bought my DSLR early this year, and got it just before a trip to England in March, so I signed up for the one day bootcamp to get my sea legs before the trip. I had all the basics I needed to take some fantastic photos, and I owe it to Richard. I find that his handouts are excellent for explaining concepts, and that if you pay attention and ask questions, you will get out of it what you put into it.

I'm currently finishing up Photo 1, and planning to take Photo 2. I would recommend Photo 1 to anyone who really wants to maximize their investment in their DSLR. After 7 weeks with Richard, I have a great foundation that I will continue to build on. I find his classes to be straightforward and practical. I personally love his humor, and think that his personality is part of the reason I like the school. All of the lab instructors are very accomodating, and I was very happy that a busy changing schedule was easily accomodated with different classes during the week. I also find their detailed labs for Lightroom to be EXCELLENT, and I'm now using it at home to "fix" any mistakes I have made!

I just went to my first photo show tonight, and I think that this school is a great place for people who love photography and want to grow with their photography interest in a place that values their individuality. I'm very glad that I chose Richard's school.

Every Class Must Be Different

I bought the Saturday evening class for Richard Stromberg photography was not impressed.

I have to say I did not learn anything at all. You may ask why the 2 stars then...and I guess I will tell you. They had great cheese and crackers, oh and wine! Yes, yes...i guess I am rating this for the food and not for the photography. I have had my DSLR camera for about half a year and have been using it frequently, but I do not know much besides the basics. I was hoping to learn a little more than I had already know, but the girl next to me and I found the class useless and good just to meet others that are confused about the techniques of a DSLR camera. He did hand out SLR cameras to those who did not have them.

He insisted I use his because he didn't know some of the canon questions I had, but then how will I ever know? I wish I had better things to say than this, but I don't. I was hoping to learn something, but felt like I had wasted a Saturday night on this. Good thing I went to eat Ethipoian food after this to vent.

I found Richard to be very unorganized and slightly short tempered. For goodness sakes, this is not a college class. He constanly wanted our attention even if we were testing out our camera. I found more humor in his anger than to listen up and follow his directions. I felt like he was going on tangent ends of nonsense that I didn't understand. I think every class must be different.

I am glad I had cought a youswoop and had not paid full price overall, but great cheese, crackers, and wine (oh and some great people I met).

It is true, people that are arrogant and self centered do not learn anything in my workshops. I wish I could figure out who those people are before they come in so I could advise them to go elsewhere. The only good think to come out of the experience is that I'm pretty sure they will not come back. Maybe next time you attend something where someone it trying teach you something you should try paying attention to the instructor and not talking to your friend. I think yelp should give us a way to give customers stars.

Richard Will Support You Unconditionally

About two years ago I started researching all the different Chicago photography schools/classes. I decided to call Richard because he said so on his website – before I bought my SLR because he doesn't want anyone to get scammed or taken by stores. More importantly, he wants everyone to go into a store with a comfortable knowledge of what they are looking for in a camera. I waited about a year and a half until I could afford my SLR camera...researched classes again, and based on Richard's authenticity, candor and genuineness on his website, I decided to take Photo I.

He may be rough around the edges, but this is not to be taken as a negative or a fault. It shows that he brings to his students and classes life experience. After all, you can give a photographer all the tools, techniques, books and lectures in the world, but teaching someone to have an "eye" – to see inside another person – is another gift to have and one to learn. I have always loved the art of photography, but never had someone give me the confidence to believe in myself enough to pursue it. Richard will support you unconditionally – lend you equipment, answer the phone and answer questions and be responsive to feedback about the classes. From speaking with friends that have taken other classes – whether at the Art Institute, the ones on Lincoln, or elsewhere, the element of human interaction and respect for a student's desire to learn differentiates Richard's Classes from the others.

I read one review where the class was described as "discombobulated", that he was annoyed by what seemed to be personally motivated handouts for extra reading not related to the class, and about the stories that Richard told, some political or not. The student must have been hearing, but did not *listen* to the message. Richard doesn't care where you're from, how much $$ you have, or who you voted for in the last Aldermanic election: he tells the stories in order for us to learn. I associate the f16 rule with the Corn Palace; it is just yet another way for people to learn.

I highly recommend taking Photo I if you just purchased your SLR. Don't worry about getting to know it yet... I didn't know it that well. I'm now taking Photo II and the close-up Macro class. If you are really trying to decide between places/classes, b/c yes, it's a lot of money, go to each place and talk with the people there, speak with the instructors, ask how many people are in each class, etc. I'm happy with my decision.

I just finished Photo I with Richard last week and I feel as though I should be paying him more for the class! I learned so much in both the lab and the weekly class I could not have asked for more. Just with Photo I, I now feel like I have an understanding of how to capture the photos I have been trying so hard to produce over the past year. I am now in Photo II and was already blown away by how much I learned on the first night of class! This is an awesome school where everyone is out to help each other. You don't have to worry about grades because they are not given and you truly can develop into the photographer you have always dreamed to be!

I recommend this class to everyone, totally worth the investment!

I've just finished the Photo I class and started Photo II today. Richard has established a really awesome place to learn photography, all aspects of it, not just how to use your camera. We worked on composition, ethics, relating to your subject and much more. The class was fun and relaxed. The popcorn is both fresh and free; help yourself.

Richard has great policies, including a free workshop on the principles of exposure. Also, for Photo I, the tuition is not collected until the second class, which gives you a chance to see if there is a fit for you. Almost all schools/classes ask for money upfront. You are allowed to make up classes at other times. Help is always there as he responds quickly to emails and phone calls.

I feel like I've found a photography home.

This class was amazing! I just finished Photo 1 and the class went beyond my expectations for the money I spent. Richard was fun and provided our class time with many real-life examples during his lessons. He also always made himself available if I had any questions outside of class and was more than willing to help in any way he could.

The lab was a vital part of the class and I learned so much with digital processing. The lab teachers were knowledgeable and spent a lot of time helping me even if it wasn't for a project due in the class itself. All of the teachers encourage you to go beyond the projects and are more than willing to help if you have any questions.

All in all, I am definitely going to be continuing the classes and expanding my knowledge in photography. This class really helped me as I am new to the city and don't know many people here. I have met so many different people in the class and truly feel that this school has only added to my love of Chicago. If anyone is looking to really learn and expand their photographic skill, this school is the one.

I just finished the Photo 1 class and can't say enough good things about it. Richard really made class fun & interesting not just by sharing his expertise and stories but with his great sense of humor too. I loved the format of having a combination of class, a separate lab time and the homework assignments. It really helped bring everything I was learning together. The staff was always extremely helpful and you can tell they are all really passionate about working there and sharing their knowledge of photography. I also liked the size of the class. I really felt like we all got specialized attention and we were never made to feel like we weren't "good enough." I loved how any "mistakes" we made were simply turned in to a great learning experience and we would learn how to correct it for the next time. Very helpful!! I think this class is definitely worth the money and I will be taking many more classes here. For now..it's on to Photo 2 for me! Can't wait!

I started with Richard Stromberg's Photography Classes in September, 2010. I chose this school in part because of the approach to teaching and the great choice of words on the website!!

In continuing my quest to become a 'great photographer' I am currently taking the 'Detachable on Camera Flash' class. Although the class is challenging and I doubt sometimes if it's syncing in, I realize that it is, when I speak to other people (non-students) about the class and sometimes surprise myself at what I'm saying and their looking at me saying 'I have no clue, what you just said' Makes me smile!

I enjoy the community spirit that radiates throughout the building and will continue on my quest with, in my opinion some of the greatest teachers in the field.

Photo III with LeJean, and Marcus , let me start by saying I am sad that this class has ended. LaJean, and Marcus are some of the BEST teachers I have had, at Chicago Photography Classes. This was an amazing class for me. You know when something is good to you? You want to do it again and again. That is the way I feel about this class. It was very challenging. LeJean has a great eye for photographs. When she says she likes looking at photos, you can tell that she really loves it by the way face lights up when you present her with your pictures. When she critiques your photos it dose not hurt .LOL. She can see things that you never thought were a part of your photo. I would love to have a LeJean EYE. Out of all my photo classes this was by far the best class for me. For those of you thinking about taking photo III. It is a definite class you will want to take to elevate your photography, it did for me. Please take full advantage of her knowledge in printing, photo shop, and manual focusing. Thank you LeJean and Marcus I can't wait to do the show.

Once I Figured Out What Was Going On, I Had a Blast

The date-night class was one part introductary course, one part performance monologue. Once I figured out what was going on, I had a blast.

The first hour was a meet and greet with plenty of food and wine. This probably could have been half as long, as everyone was anxious to get into the course.

As the class was a gift for my wife, I hoped to coast by, maybe have an extra glass of wine, and keep an eye on the basketball game I was missing. Not a chance. Our instructor demanded attention (and note taking).

The lecture content was very rudimentary, I assume it's the first lesson from a much longer course. But he lectures like a libertarian Andy Rooney, full of disdain for just about everyone. It was fun to watch him get wound up.

It seemed like the most informative part was when he opened it up to questions (hint: you're doing everything wrong), and then spoke about how to buy equipment intelligently.

Overall, this is a talented artist with a personal style he deeply wants to pass on to his students. Once I stopped expecting a polished lecture, I had a blast.

I recently took photo 1 and photo 2 in your studios with some coworkers. We enjoyed the classes and thought that principles of photography that your teachers taught were exactly what the growing population of people who are purchasing DSLR cameras needs to know to fully utilize the cameras.

I think your class is ideal for anyone interested in capturing life's little moments. I would recommend the class to individuals with children, travel enthusiasts, those interested in photographing subjects in motion, including athletes and anyone looking for a great hobby.

Students will learn the settings of the DSLR camera and the principles necessary to take action photos that are not blurry, scenic photos that capture both the subject and the background and artistic photos that anyone with a new camera is just not sure how to achieve. DSLR cameras have the ability take professional looking photographs and your class can teach students how to achieve that look with the tricks of the trade!

A Comfortable and Lively Class Dynamic

I am just now completing Photo II at Richard's school and I am extremely glad that I signed up with him. I would highly recommend his school to anyone interested in learning more about photography.

Photo I starts out with Richard, who is quite a character (a good thing!). You can clearly read more about him online but suffice it to say between his deep photojournalism background and his teaching experience, he creates a very comfortable and lively class dynamic. I've enjoyed meeting and working with my classmates, which has made the experience much more fulfilling. In seven weeks you learn the basics of how to use a camera (and if you are looking for a recommendation on which one to buy, Richard will help you out).

[One word of caution...be prepared to spend a significant amount of time shooting and in lab. I run my own small consulting business and I was constantly trying to find time for both. I made it work and despite the fact it made my week busier it, oddly enough, made it much more satisfying.]

Photo II is a great class, as well (I recommend taking it with Cara F--super intelligent, funny, and a great teacher...she really knows what she is talking about and answers questions patiently and specifically). You get to apply what you learned in Photo I and then learn more about exposure, light and shadow, white balance, color temperature, etc.

At $400 per class including lab access, the price is very reasonable. It's a comfortable learning environment and I am looking forward to continuing on with more classes (which ultimately lead to the ability to submit your work for showcasing, sometimes within a year). Taking photo classes with Richard is a key Chicago experience.

Learn What Photography Is All About

Photography has always been a passion of mine since I was on my high school newspaper over 40 years ago. Since that time I have dabbled with photography going from 35mm film and darkroom developing to the APS film and finally to digital DSLR.

Due to the type of work I do time for hobbies were limited so my education with Digital Photography was limited to what I could learn from books and the internet. Having reached a point in life where I needed a hobby I decided to pursue a more formalized photography class. Searching the internet I considered going the home study route until my wife persuaded me to find and attend a class with instruction.

After researching many options in the Chicago Area I decided to try Richard Strombergs Chicago Photography Classes. This decision was based on thorough research and going to one of Richards free classes. After attending one of his classes there was no doubt in my mind if I want to learn Digital Photography this was the place to be.

I have completed Photo 1 class and am currently taking Photo 2 with full intentions to continue on to Photo 3, Flash 1 & 2 and possibly more. Richards unique style of teaching and his passion for true photography challenges everyone to learn what photography is all about. I have learned more about taking photographs (not snapshots) in the time I have spent at his classes that I ever gleaned out of books.

Each and every person that is involved with Richards organization from the instructors to the individual volunteers are knowledgeable friendly and are willing to help each and everyone attending classes there. If you really want to learn photography this is the place in Chicago to be. The real bonus is without realizing it you become part of a community.

Sincerity, Honesty and Helpfulness

I'm a cynic. I'm also a Director of Photography and camera operator for television shows and have been for the past sixteen years. I know how to compose and light a shot. I make a living shooting and lighting. I am a visual person. What could Richard really teach me that I don't already know?

I felt this way four photography classes ago when I first attended Richard's free, one day weekend class. I quickly learned that there is much knowledge to gain. I was tired of the guess work at getting a good photo. I now have an understanding of how to achieve the results I want. I have not mastered my photographic talents yet, but I have the tools and the patience to get to where I want to be.

There really is a high level of sincerity, honesty and helpfulness in each class I have taken. If I did not feel this way I would not drive an hour and a half, each way, to get to these classes.

One of the best things about all of these classes is that it has gotten me to grab my camera and take allot of pictures. Practice really does make perfect.

Great one-on-one time, Richard is always available to answer your questions. I learned so much about my camera in this first course as well. Very happy with course... highly recommend!

I started taking classes at CPC when Richard was still there. I walked into the school one day and had an interest in photography, I had no idea what an SLR camera was and Richard was there and offered to show me some books that I could look at since I couldn't afford the classes, nor an SLR camera. I left there thinking, wow... he actually cared about me learning something about photography!

Some time went by and I decided to call him and ask him what camera I should get before signing up because he had given me his phone number, which was another reason I felt comfortable at this school. I am now over a year into taking classes with him and have followed him to his new school on Irving Park and Ravenswood. I am working as a photographer and his school has given me the confidence I needed to start working in this field. Richard and his staff of teachers, volunteers, etc... care about what you learn which to me is so important. It is hard to find teachers especially in photography that actually care about your work and your success and failures. I highly recommend taking classes at Richard's school. They are nothing but the best when it comes to learning Photography.

I am currently taking On Camera Flash which is a challenge but, that is what I love about his classes, they are challenging, but they make you think and learn and that is what it is all about!!!! The teachers and his staff are absolutely AMAZING!!!

The BEST Place to Learn Photography

This is the BEST place to learn photography!  Richard knows more about photography and has more passion about teaching others than anyone I know.  The best part for beginners is the free 90-minute workshop he offers a few times a month, and the fact that the first session of the photo 1 class is free, giving you a really good idea of his teaching style before you commit.

Richard's photo 1 class is a great value.  The 8 week class includes a 2-hour lecture (where assignments are given) and a 3-hour lab where you learn how to edit and print your photos using Adobe Lightroom. Richard also helps you identify the equipment you need to take the best photos (i.e. a 50mm lens is a great start!) and provides each student with a full pack of professional quality photo paper.

Richard offers additional classes for those who want to learn more  including flash, macro, portraiture, etc.,  all taught by experts in their field.  If you want to learn photography in a fun, supportive environment, there's really no other place to go!.

I found this class dragging on far too long in very cramped space. Not so much photography as talking endlessly about nothing important. The photography could have been covered in less than half the time. I signed up because it was billed as the cheapest in town and I found out afterwards that it is nothing like the cheapest. I feel like I have been defrauded. I had to buy a compulsory new lens, which I now have no use for, and expensive paper which added another $150 to the price.

The 'psychology' lectures just seemed to go on forever with nothing interesting to learn about photography.

The restrooms are five floors down (yes five floors!). They should have found a better facility for a classroom than this. Chicago is huge so why get stuffed into a tiny space miles away from a restroom?

The volunteers were good at their jobs and there were a couple of pretty ladies taking the class which gets it an extra star.

Comment from Richard S. of Richard Stromberg's Chicago Photography Classes

He is welcome to go elsewhere. Each student attends a 90 minute workshop and 1st class, FREE. Enough time to judge classes before spending money. An inability to know why the lens was needed tells me he did not pay attention. I will buy his Lens & review his notes. There are 5 bathrooms on the 5th Fl. All students get FREE paper at their first lab. Regular on time attendance is required. He never talked to me. My # is 312-671-7717 These classes are for learning not meeting girls. Fraud is a serious charge, I have lawyers. Take down your reckless review. You have waisted my Time.

Comment from Jim F.

This is the nasty, threatening email I just got from Richard Stromberg in response to my review. I think it speaks volumes.

"Your review on yelp and teach street is inaccurate and libels my name and business. You were given two opportunities in free classes to asses weather or not the class met your needs. Withdraw you nasty reviews or face a law suite for libel. I will buy the 50 mm f1.8 lens from you. All students were given free paper, if you did not get yours then you were either not present in class or not paying attention. Other class members will testify to your conduct and class attendance The bathrooms are across the hall and open 24 hours a day. The entire curriculum is published on the web site and you were informed of the curriculum at the first class. Take your anger out on someone else. If you are late for class and miss the opening remarks than you will not know what's going on. That is not my fault. At no time did you complain to me that you were having trouble. Your inability to communicate is not my fault. Withdraw your reviews or face the consequences."

And a further piece of abuse from the "professional" today. This says more about Stromberg himself than a thousand reviews could. I have never entered into any dialog with this "professional". These are unsolicited, threatening emails to me purely in response to my review.

"I would like you to send me the name and phone number and e-mail address of your mother or legal guardian so I can discuss with them your problem with truth telling. I also think someone should contact NASA to let them know that the universe now rotates around you. They will want to attach a GPS transmitter to your ankle so they can keep their calculations current for there space ships (launches). The GPS will also keep the rest of us in the world informed where you are so we can keep our doors locked. Grow Up Pal I with draw my offer to buy back your lens."

Learned More Here Than In College

I've taken Photo I with Richard and and I'm currently enrolled in Photo II. In college I took photography classes (35mm film) and after 15yrs. decided to pickup the camera again, this time a DSLR.

Having completed Photo I, I can absolutely say that I learned far more from Richard and my lab instructors than I did in college. Students are given technical information to build a strong foundation, while simultaneously encouraged to think through solving challenges on their own. The assignments really push budding photographers to stretch themselves creatively and technically. I also learned to work with photo editing software in the photo lab, which isn't always intuitive so I really appreciated the instruction in this area.

Even if you have a photography background, you will still learn something new. Also, it's really nice to meet the community of photographers who've developed around Richard. I love seeing what more advanced students and the instructors are shooting and hearing about their experiences.

Richard (and all of the instructors) bring an enthusiasm and love for photography that is truly refreshing and inspiring.

I'd never owned a "nice" camera before, but always wanted to take professional classes. After attending Richard's first free class, I really liked the friendly and open environment and signed up for Photo I. It was a phenomenal class where you learn photography basics of exposure, capturing motion, aperture, etc. Each week you build upon what you've already learned, and on the last assignment you really get a sense for how much you actually learned over the last 8 weeks. Richard takes the time to answer everyone's questions thoughtfully, and you get a great base to start editing photos in Lightroom.

Photo II is a great next step after Photo I. You learn more about ways to manipulate your camera to get the shots with white balance and difficult exposure situations, composition, color and editing and more. If you take Photo I, absolutely take Photo II to really get a full understanding of what your camera can really do. They have other classes and boot camps offered, but I highly recommend this place for anyone who wants to learn how to take amazing photos. AND THE BEST THING: you get the best teachers at half the cost of other places! I can take 2 clas ses here for what 1 class is elsewhere. Sign up or at attend the free class to see if you like it, but I am positive you will!

Best Bargain in Town

Looking for a photo class? Look no further. Richard Stromberg's Photo 1 course was the best thing I did with my summer. As an amateur photographer someday hoping to go pro, I've spent the past few years trying to learn my way around my camera. I've bought a shelf's worth of books, purchased and watched DVD tutorials, sat in on free workshops, and taken a course at The New School in New York. And while all of that learning was certainly of value, I'm amazed at how much time and money I could've saved if I'd just gone directly to Richard.

Photo 1 is an 8-week course that covers the foundations of digital photography. You learn the principles of exposure (aperture, shutter speed, ISO, light available), and how to manipulate each to your design. Weekly assignments are given, each revolving around a different theme (motion, depth of field, perspective, etc.) I was amazed at how fun and addictive the assignments became. I learned so much in such a small period of time, that I often found myself shooting well over the allotted number of pictures each week.

My experience as a photo student has run the gamut. I've done the big lecture classes, the small one-on-one teachings, the online courses, and the self-guided readings. None of these compared to Richard Stromberg's Photo Classes. They're the perfect size (less than 20 students), his teaching style is fun and interactive, and you'll be amazed at how much you learn so quickly. It's truly a photography community... open, welcoming, no pretense. Particularly helpful for those of us intimidated by the typical "photo school" attitude. You begin to form a bond with your fellow students, critiquing and championing each other's work. Everyone comes for a different reason: to learn a new camera, to become the family photographer, to chart a new career, to pick up the weekend hobby. Whatever the goal, we all share a common denominator: to take better pictures. And you will.

I titled this review "Best Bargain in Town," and even that may be an understatement. At $400 for an 8-week course that meets twice a week for three hours each... that comes to $8.33 an hour. And the first class is free. I just spent more than that on lunch at Subway. And the receipt doesn't look quite as pretty framed on my wall.

Richard's Chicago Photography Classes is a young, but quickly-growing community of students, teachers and volunteers who are all focused on one thing – helping one another become better photographers. There is no doubt that taking courses here will improve your skills. In fact, you will probably surprise yourself at what you are capable of. Richard's courses are designed to be challenging, and will require a significant time committment and effort. However, the hard work pays off in spades. You will have an endless amount of resources at your disposal to help you through the learning process, including a team of dedicated instructors and volunteers (not to mention fellow-students) who are always willing to offer valuable advice and feedback. It is this community aspect that makes Richard's school such an effective learning environment. Teaching photography is Richard's life-mission, and his level of committment, wisdom and experience cannot be matched anywhere else.

I really enjoyed my time in Richard's classes. His approach is to teach you the basics and then encourage you to push your creativity to the limits. He literally lives and breathes photography and art, and it shows in everything he does. From the community of local photographers that he inspires, to the encouragement and constructive criticism he dishes out, he's one of a kind and I will always appreciate the knowledge and experience he helped me achieve.
